One of the biggest challenges for me has been navigating my cancer diagnosis while working in the offshore industry. It’s a difficult industry to work in under normal circumstances, but being a young woman who is also dealing with cancer makes it even more complex. The social challenges have also affected me. None of my peers have dealt with cancer so they can’t understand what I’ve been through. This experience has helped me see who my true friends are and who I want to spend my time with. My cancer journey has been an eye opener. My entire outlook on life has changed. I really do live every day to the fullest now and I have come to realize the real value of friends and family.

While I was in Ontario for treatment, my friends entered a Light the Night team in support of me at the St. John’s walk. The following year I was the Honoured Hero and we all walked together.

For me, Light the Night is about determination, hope, and reflection on all that I’ve been through. It’s also a chance for our loved ones to come together in support of each another. Cancer affects us in different ways, but we all need to feel like we are not alone in this experience.

Blood cancer affects so many people of all ages. If you don’t know anyone now, sadly you probably will someday.  Don’t ever give up hope that together we can help change that.

Do you have a story to tell?

As a supporter, in memory, or as a survivor… share with others why you are helping end blood cancers by participating in a Light the Night Walk
